45 Mile: Long Creek Trading Post

This gold nugget was found at Long Creek at 45.5 Mile on the Steese Highway. Paul Potvin is the owner/operator of the Long Creek Trading Post. You can rent canoes here and have Paul take you upstream on the Chatanika River for varying distances to float, paddle, and fish (grayling) your way back to the Trading Post.

Jim has lived in Central since 1982, and owned and operated Crabbs Corner on the corner of the Steese Highway and Circle Hot Springs Road from 1982 to 2002. "Crabbs" was known throughout Alaska for its 20 years of involvement in the many activities of Interior Alaska. Crabbs Corner hosted holiday events throughout the year, picnics in the summer, and was the Crabbs Corner Checkpoint for the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race every February. The Quest mushers were treated to free steaks and fixings on their journey through.

He is now working to bring Circle Hot Springs back to life at Nugget Gulch. Come up and be part of it. You'll be glad you did. This is authentic pioneer Alaska, folks. Residents are still clearing land, building cabins, mining, fishing, hunting and wandering around the incredible Interior Alaska Wilderness. For one thing, the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve is nearby, and the mighty Yukon River is just up the Steese Highway at Circle City. ("Circle" to the locals.)
